Olympics 2012 - looking for that edge? Or just improving your fitness?

With the current phenomenal success for Team GB in the Beijing Olympics and the upcoming 2012 games to be held in the UK, interest in Olympic events has never been greater. For any athlete whether amateur or aspiring Olympian, the key word is preparation, preparation, preparation… being able to monitor progress daily, weekly, monthly of your fitness regime has never been easier thanks to Garmin & their cost effective Forerunner 50 FP.

The Forerunner 50 FP is an interesting product, but not because it’s the company’s first non-GPS device or even that it’s the first Garmin watch that actually looks like a watch. Without a doubt, getting rid of the GPS receiver and antenna has allowed Garmin to create something that actually fits on most runners’ wrists. But, while it’s a much smaller training watch than the boxy Forerunner 305, it’s also much simpler. Its design is somewhat plain and overall it doesn’t offer the kind of advanced heart rate training options available elsewhere.

GArmin Forerunner FPWhat makes it a compelling product; however, are the two accessories that come with it--the foot pod and the USB fob. The foot pod is about one-third the size of Garmin’s previous version, and it measures both stride rate (cadence) and stride length, which are extremely useful metrics to track in becoming a more efficient runner.

This new foot pod is also a heck of a lot easier to attach to a shoe. And you don't have to remember to turn it on before you go for a run. Like the HR monitor, it stays in standby mode until it senses movement. And it slips back into standby 30 minutes after you're done.

The USB fob is worth noting because it creates a wireless connection between your PC and the Forerunner 50. When you bring the watch within five metres of the USB fob, it automatically uploads the data from your last run--all you have to do is drop the watch in front of the PC. This may sound like a minor accomplishment at a time when you can use your mobile phone for everything even a boarding pass, but when you’ve just finished a grueling long run, the last thing you want to do is look for a USB cable.

Once it’s on your PC, each new workout is uploaded directly to Garmin Connect, the company’s new online training site. Garmin Connect is a slick version of Motionbased, the online training site that Garmin bought a while ago. Garmin Connect tracks your data, presents it in flashy charts and tables, and lets you share your runs with other users.

The DMC-FZ28: A Super-Versatile Digital Camera

The FZ28 is the successor of the popular FZ18 and comes with a slightly increased resolution (10.1 vs 8.0 MP) and all the zoom range ever needed (27-486mm, 35mm equivalent).
eXpansys is expecting the delivery of the Lumix DMC-FZ28 for the 25th of August.

The DMC-FZ28 is joining Panasonic’s popular FZ series of cameras packing a high-powered zoom into a compact body. The FZ28 also features 10.1-megapixel resolution and adds a number of enhanced features that boost user fun and convenience through an advanced „Intelligent Auto“ mode, enabling users of any level to take high-quality pictures.

Also the „Auto Focus“ Tracking function, allows users to lock the focus on a moving subject. The camera then automatically tracks the subject as it moves, keeping it in focus without the need to hold the shutter halfway down.
AF Tracking enables to capture moving subjects and take your picture at the ideal moment. The AF Tracking technology also improves Face Detection (up to 15 faces), by providing continuous adjustment of the focus and exposure, even if the face is turned away from the camera.

In addition to the AF Tracking functionality, Panasonic's other iA technologies include:
- Intelligent Exposure The camera will automatically adjust the brightness according to the ligthness.
- Digital Red-eye Correction
- MEGA O.I.S. – Gyrosensors detect hand-shake and the lens system shifts to compensate, helping to prevent hand-shake from creating a blurry image.
- Intelligent ISO – Determines if the photo subject is moving and changes the ISO setting and shutter speed accordingly, thus giving a blur-free photo.
- Intelligent Scene Selector – Senses the ambient conditions, recognizes the shooting environment and will automatically select the appropriate scene mode from: Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode.  This helps the photographer to use the most common scene modes without making any manual adjustments.
- Quick AF (Auto Focus) – Starts focusing on the subject just by pointing the camera at the subject.
Image Leveling - When a captured image "leans" to the right or left because the camera was held at a slight angle when the photo was taken, the Image Leveling function rotates the image to straighten it and crops the unnecessary edges. No computer needed!
- Scene Modes - The DMC-FZ28 is offering 37 scene modes to respond easily to any shooting situation.
- Flash - Reaching a distance of 8.5 meters at the wide setting and 5.4 meters at the telephoto setting (ISO AUTO).
- SILKYPIX Developer Studio 3.0 SE - Software application comes bundled with the DMC-FZ28 for editing and developing images in the RAW file format.

Want free unlimited music downloads? Welcome to Nokia's "Comes with Music" service.

Selected Nokia handsets will ship with "Comes with Music" content that will let you download unlimited music free of charge for 12 months. You can download songs directly onto your handset or at home onto a PC.

There are a couple of cravats with this service which are worth mentioning:
  • Handsets with the service cost more.
  • The tracks still use DRM, so will only play on a PC or Nokia mobile.
  • You cannot copy the tracks to CD without paying an additional fee per track.
After the 12 months have finished, you can keep any music you've downloaded, but if you want to download more songs, then can you either purchasing a separate subscription, or buy another Nokia "Comes with Music" handset.
Nokia's "Comes with Music" service is optional, for those of you who just want the handset without the service, you still buy them at a reduced cost.

The first handsets to offer this service will be the Nokia N95 8GB & Nokia 5310 Xpress Music with more to be announced shortly.
